It was between sets at the Hawthorne Theater during the Atticus Metal Tour III and I was just walking around, stretching my legs and getting some air. I’m carrying my camera and a guy comments on it. We talk for a few minutes and I learn he’s the singer of one of the headlining bands, Sonik from As Blood Runs Black. Just the fact that he struck up conversation with me, a random person in the crowd (unknowing that I write for a website), got my attention. I’ve gone to shows before where I see a band member and I’ll just say “Hi” or “Good luck” and I won’t get any sign of recognition. So I was impressed by this band before they even got on stage.

The stage show was good too. This band got the crowd pumped, there was more stage diving then I’ve ever seen at a show. I’ve been to big main-stream shows in which the crowd, whilst excited, seemed to not actually know much put out by the band. When this band hit the stage though you could see fans screaming along to the lyrics.

The worst part of this show was actually the crowd, not the band. There was a point when the kids were getting on stage to dive off, because everyone else was doing it. There was one kid that got up at least a half dozen times and he didn’t just jump off, he’d be on stage for a bit in a “hey look at me” fashion all the while stepping in front of band member, knocking things over, etc… Even the crowd didn’t like this kid, he’s lucky he didn’t fall straight on the ground those times he jumped because the crowd was obviously trying to get out of his way. The band was a great sport about it though, playing through their set and trying to ignore the kid. I swear though I saw a couple of “are you serious” looks being passed around though. It was just very distracting.

The band exhibited lots of energy, lots of movement and head banging. Sonik's screaming got the crowd jumping and going crazy. He seems to take up an almost demonic persona on stage, perfectly befiting the music he's throwing out there. While the whole band did amazing, most of the attention really is on the singer.

Check these guys out on tour if they come near you, but until then check out their new CD, Instinct! In stores and on iTunes!
