Extreme Thing Festival Review 28/04/2012
_ This was my first year attending the Extreme Thing Festival in Las Vegas, NV. While I thought the lineup this year was quite good, I’d heard countless complaints about how the lineup didn’t compare to past years. One of the main issues I had was the venue – while quite beautiful and open it was way too spaced out. Many of the bands started about fifteen minutes apart, so that would be enough time to photograph a band for the first three songs and get to the next stage and take pictures right? Wrong! The distance between the upper stages and the lowers stages was ridiculous, coupled with a mass amount of people and poorly made traveling paths, it took fifteen minutes in itself just to get from one end to the other. There was very little shade (coming from Oregon to Nevada I almost cried) and the only source of running water was the bathroom sinks. The next big issue I had was with security – They had no idea what they were doing! Upon entering the venue (which didn’t have single file lines and instead was a giant crowd attempting to push their way to the security check) it was a typical security check with guards patting down patrons and checking bags. However their setup was so disorganized that I got through completely without being check at all while my assistant (lacky), who was carrying my laptop, got her bag ripped from her and slammed down on the table. On one hand I understand them being rough, it is Las Vegas after all, but on the other hand, they obviously didn’t do that good of a job. There were kids openly smoking weed and snorting cocaine. While the weed I can understand at a festival, who goes around openly snorting coke?! After that though, my next issue was that I was unable to take photos for about two hours while PR and security got things sorted out. While my photo pass was on my shirt and plainly visible, it matched the one on the picture given to security in every way except for the color, theirs was scanned black and white while mine was a pinkish purple color. So because mine wasn’t the right color they weren’t letting me back to take pictures. The security men posted as the stages didn’t know their job! While they got better with the photo thing, they didn’t seem to get better with their job as the day went on. When I was waiting at one of the main stages for Less Than Jake to end so I could go backstage and interview The Used, the security guard posted at the stage was letting random pretty girls back. I’m not sure what they said to get back there, but you know they weren’t supposed to as one came over to her group of friends right in front of me and said, “We’re getting back, Squeeeeeel.” Yet when I was actually back there, still waiting for my interview, Austin Carlile from Of Mice & Men was trying to get backstage. He didn’t have his pass on him but he’d performed earlier in the day. The security guard wouldn’t let him back even though people, even me, kept telling him that he was in a band. Time for my press complaints – I’ve done a couple interviews (not many because of my location and very few concerts near here) and this is the first time I’ve ever had a “handler” of sorts. My first interview with The Word Alive I was backstage and interviewing Telle when one of the women from the press agency called me asking where I was so she could take me back for the interview… oops. The next was where the interviews were, right next to the stages. Fortunately for The Word Alive we didn’t have a band playing during the interview, but when The Used came back for the interview they came back like twenty minutes later than scheduled and since I was the last one interview them Underoath started during the middle of our interview and the sound interfered with so much of it that I missed chunks. While the things I’ve said are negative, the music itself was awesome. I hated that some of the best bands were put on the smaller stages because they weren’t “huge” bands. I definitely enjoyed the music – Transit, The Word Alive, The Wonder Years (better live), The Used, Less Than Jake was fantastic and very funny. I’m mixed with my feelings of Extreme Thing Festival and not sure if I’m going to make the trek to Vegas so I can attend next year, we’ll see I guess. Add Comment Skrillex Live - Worth the Money? 30/10/2011
I had the pleasure of seeing Skrillex live in Eugene, OR on September 26, 2011. Let me tell you, it was no small thing either. The tickets to the show sold out so quickly that by the time I found out they were playing near here, they were already all gone. I wasn’t gonna pay $90+ on Stubhub or that much to someone on Craigslist. But I actually found a friend that couldn’t make it and sold their ticket at face value. Eugene, however, is still a 2.5 hour drive which is about $50 round trip. So a $22 dollar ticket plus gas, we’re just north of $70 to see Skrillex. Now I’m going to tell you a bit about my concert experience and give my conclusion on whether or not it’s worth the effort and money, because these days $70 is a lot. I got to the McDonald Theatre at about 7pm, show started at 8. Surprisingly, there weren’t many people there, even once the show started it seemed incredibly small for a sold out show. It wasn’t until 12th Planet came on that I saw the crowd really grow, though it had been steadily growing until that point. The first act, Nadastrom, was a charming duo. Though their songs were pleasant for about the first 10 minutes, they all sounded incredibly similar, you couldn’t tell where one song ended and the next began. I did however like these guys, they had a fantastic stage presence and one was wearing a poncho, you can’t dislike someone in a poncho. The next act was Two Fresh a group consisting of twin brother DJs and a live drummer. When they came on it sounded really great, their music different from the first group (at 45 minute sets, we were thankful it wasn’t the same thing again) turned into the same problem. While Two Fresh are undeniably talented, their set once again sounded great for the first 10 or so before we realized that it once again sounded like one really long, never ending song. While the crowd went in and out of jumping and dancing, many were zoning out or talking to others in the crowd. It was during Two Fresh’s set that I left the crowd to sit in the back against a wall. The crowd at this show was terrible, seaming to consist mainly of high school students thinking they are cool because they’re doing drugs and at a Skrillex show. The crowd was so bad that despite the music, I almost left early, before the man I went to see even came on. Third to play was 12th Planet and let me tell you, his set was fantastic. He played a full set of great songs that were distinctly their own songs, what I mean is you could tell the songs apart from each other, it was nice. His stage presence is great, he’s full of energy on the stage and even jumped off and crowd surfed twice. He threw out a couple remixes, including All I Ask of You by Skrillex (ft. Penny), getting the crowd pumped up for the next and final artist. So really this is it, my conclusion where I will tell you if seeing Skrillex is worth the money, the time getting there, and dealing with the crowd. Setting up Skrillex’s stage took a big longer than the other acts, but once the curtain was pulled down you could see why, he had a full stage set up and during his act projected things on to the set. It was, to say the least, really cool. He also had motion detector (things) attached to him so one of the projections behind him (be it a robot, alien, or something else) was mimicking his actions. At the beginning of his set I was in the crowd excited to see him, but strangely enough I then chose to watch from the back. One thing I have to say is Sonny Moore, please grow! The man is short, I’m sorry but it’s true. I spent the first 10 minutes of the set on my tiptoes throwing my head back and forth to try and see him, which is why I ended up moving to the back, which had a much better view. Musically I was not disappointed. One thing I was worried about, which might worry you as well, was that because he is essentially a DJ that he’d just be playing his songs just like off the CD so you’d be pretty much paying to hear a CD you already own. Let me tell you this though, I’ve heard a lot of remixes of his work, but no one does it like he does. He remixed songs, mixed some together, and all around pulled off a really great show. There was even a bit of comedy with his Mac Book froze and we got to hear a little cursing from the man. I know this was long and drawn out, but it’s a FULL concert review, all the bands, everything. After everything, I’d have to tell you seeing Skrillex was definitely worth it, the man puts on a great show. I’d definitely see him again… just probably not in Eugene. The Dangerous Summer - Live Review 17/08/2011
Check out more photos from this show in our gallery! This band was my big fan moment band. There were a lot of great bands playing at Warped Tour this year, but this is the one I was most excited about, this band is The Dangerous Summer. They played the Nintendo 3DS stage and I got there about 20 minutes early to get my camera ready and everything. While I was walking around the stage I saw some fans trying to get backstage, they didn’t succeed, but from this I saw singer AJ Perdomo standing at the fence talking to someone. I walked over and when they were done talking he looked at me. Like I said, this was my fan moment, so I asked him for a photo. He was nice and came around, outside his special little band area, and took a photo with me. Those fans trying to get backstage noticed him, not sure if they knew who he was, but asked him about getting backstage so he took them. The set itself was nothing special for a live performance. They had lots of energy on stage, constantly moving around. They played the hits off their first cd and even one or two from their new CD War Paint. They didn’t really address the crowd much, other than to plug the new CD, so that was disappointing. The music itself though was good, better than what I’m used to hearing live these days. There are a lot of bands that will play live and sound exactly like they did on the CD, which kind of takes away from the fact that you’re watching and hearing it live. But these guys, they were playing live and had that raw sound you should be able to expect from a live band. Overall, it was a good performance, but once again it was nothing special. I love this band so I’d see them again any day. My recommendation though, I’m not going to suggest passing these guys up but at the same time I’m not going to tell you that you need to see these guys. See these guys if you like the music, it’s worth it. Bowling for Soup - Live Review! 17/08/2011
So this year I decided to attend the Vans Warped Tour and one of the bands was Bowling for Soup. They only played the last three stops of the tour and they weren’t on any of the online lists or anything, so no one knew they were attending until we got there. Unlike many of the bands though, when they weren’t playing or at the scheduled signing, instead of hiding out in their bus or backstage, they spent the whole time in their booth talking and hanging out with fans. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I decided to watch the Bowling for Soup set. Sure I remember some of their songs from back in the day, but I figured they must be old and washed up by now. At the very least they are old. I can concede that at the beginning of the set it was awkward listening to older men singing about high school, haven’t they moved past that by now? These guys though, they put on a better set then any of the other bands I saw perform. They were really funny and they engaged the crowd a lot more than most bands. You guys ever notice those kids that crowd surf, whether or not a song is playing? Well these guys noticed, and in order to help these kids not feel stupid, they played a song called “Between Song Surfing,” which also happened to be all the lyrics of the song. Another never released song they played was “Chris’ Warped Tour Girlfriend,” cleverly enough it was about Chris… getting his Warped Tour girlfriend. Another special thing about this set that’s different from anything I’ve ever seen before was that during Punk Rock 101 they paused in the middle and did a photo shoot for the fans. They posed on different sides of the stage and fans had out their little point and shoot cameras and iPhones, taking pictures of the band. This was one of the last sets of the day and after standing in the sun for 8 hours, completely drained, I still had a blast. Fans were jumping around and singing along to all the songs. Anyone who missed this show really missed out and if you have a chance to see these guys, take it! As Blood Runs Black Live 21/03/2011
![]() It was between sets at the Hawthorne Theater during the Atticus Metal Tour III and I was just walking around, stretching my legs and getting some air. I’m carrying my camera and a guy comments on it. We talk for a few minutes and I learn he’s the singer of one of the headlining bands, Sonik from As Blood Runs Black. Just the fact that he struck up conversation with me, a random person in the crowd (unknowing that I write for a website), got my attention. I’ve gone to shows before where I see a band member and I’ll just say “Hi” or “Good luck” and I won’t get any sign of recognition. So I was impressed by this band before they even got on stage. The stage show was good too. This band got the crowd pumped, there was more stage diving then I’ve ever seen at a show. I’ve been to big main-stream shows in which the crowd, whilst excited, seemed to not actually know much put out by the band. When this band hit the stage though you could see fans screaming along to the lyrics. The worst part of this show was actually the crowd, not the band. There was a point when the kids were getting on stage to dive off, because everyone else was doing it. There was one kid that got up at least a half dozen times and he didn’t just jump off, he’d be on stage for a bit in a “hey look at me” fashion all the while stepping in front of band member, knocking things over, etc… Even the crowd didn’t like this kid, he’s lucky he didn’t fall straight on the ground those times he jumped because the crowd was obviously trying to get out of his way. The band was a great sport about it though, playing through their set and trying to ignore the kid. I swear though I saw a couple of “are you serious” looks being passed around though. It was just very distracting. The band exhibited lots of energy, lots of movement and head banging. Sonik's screaming got the crowd jumping and going crazy. He seems to take up an almost demonic persona on stage, perfectly befiting the music he's throwing out there. While the whole band did amazing, most of the attention really is on the singer. Check these guys out on tour if they come near you, but until then check out their new CD, Instinct! In stores and on iTunes! Go to our gallery to check out more pictures from the show! The Human Abstract Live 21/03/2011
![]()
Hawthorne Theater is a pretty small venue in Portland, Oregon. An intimate setting for a great line-up of metal bands. One band in particular drew me to the show and that’s The Human Abstract. They are one of the headlining bands for the Atticus Metal Tour III. This tour is promoting their newest CD titled Digital Veil. This band is dedicated to making their show the best they can. Founder A.J. Minette spends his time before the set practicing the guitar. Every time I looked back to where he was, both before the show and during the two opening bands, he was standing by the merch booth with his guitar going over what he needs to do. The set in general was a great experience. For those that either have the CD or have at least heard a song off the new album let me tell you, Travis screams just as amazing live as he does on the recording. Which is something I was very excited about hearing because Travis is most known previously as his role as guitarist in From First to Last. You’d think he’d almost be out of his comfort zone but instead he seemed right at home on that stage screaming his lungs out to these songs. The whole band was just pouring their hearts into this show, it was very refreshing to see a metal band so full of life and so full of energy with moves on stage that seemed more in the moment compared to a lot of the rehearsed moves(for example synchronized head banging) you see a lot of metal bands doing. Guitarist Dean Herrera was noticeable on stage, though he stayed predominately near the mic where he could provide backup vocals when needed. His guitar playing is absolutely amazing and he’s full of energy on stage, swinging his long dreads all over the place. The killer drum beats were put out by drummer Brett Powell, unfortunately with the way the stage was set up I didn’t have a good view of him from my side of the stage. Lastly but not least is bassist Henry Selva who energetically moved all over the stage all the while posing and playing bass. He seemed to be one of the bigger showmen, giving the crowd something to look at, unfortunately he was kind of in the middle of the stage behind A.J. and Travis. He was completely noticeable from my angle but I doubt much of the crowd on the other side or even the middle got a very good look at him. Not only is the band full of energy, the crowd is as well. Moshing and stage diving, it’s an old school metal show. This is a band any metal lover should go see, it’s a great experience. Go to the Gallery page to check out some pics from the show! Otep Live 13/12/2010
![]()
10 years after they last played in Medford, female fronted metal band Otep returned, a homecoming for their drummer. The three main bands were supposed to be The Agonist, The Birthday Massacre, and Otep. Unfortunately The Agonist had to drop out at the last minute, so last minute in fact that most people didn’t realize they had dropped out until after the concert when they hadn’t played. It was made up for by the fact that aside from the two main bands there were two local bands one was unknown but the other was popular metal band Tallboy, also on tour was metal band Beneath the Sky. One of the best parts of this concert was the small venue, the smaller room not often used at Vibes Main1 Art Center. The Otep set itself was one of the more strange ones I’ve ever seen. After each song Otep herself would walk off and come back with either a mask, veil of some sort, or a prop. Because of this strange practice the set was slow paced. The stage itself was pretty interesting, there were a couple different microphone stands for her to use, all decorated different, one of the more popular props seemed to be a pig head on a stick that she used as a prop during a song. They only played songs from their newer CD, which was very disappointing. The band itself was fabulous, their newer music reverting back to their old sound, more raw metal but still filled with political statements. Otep Shamaya has an amazing voice, an amazing ability to scream not only on CD but sounding just as amazing live. While it is a strange set they are an amazing band and given a chance to see them again I would do it in a heartbeat. 30 Seconds to Mars 13/12/2010
![]() It’s impossible to have not heard 30 Seconds to Mars on the radio at one point or another because this band springs out hit after hit. I wasn’t sure about seeing them live when I heard they were going to be playing in my quaint little town but the day of the show I made up my mind and bought my ticket. This turned out to be one of the most memorable concert experiences for me, one of those things that people go to concerts and wish would happen. I got in line and barely five minutes there I’d already regretted it because some little kid, whom I always manage to see at concerts, was bouncing around screaming how he saw Jared Leto while he was on his way to the restroom. This is one of those kids that goes to a concert and is the biggest fan of the band that’s playing and everyone else is a poser, yeah, one of those types. So when a roadie for the band came out and asked if anyone wanted to go around town and hand out flyers I literally jumped at the chance. After handing me the flyers he told me to go to the curtain at the side of the stage at a certain time and I’d get on stage with the band. Well I started at the mall to give some handbills to the shops and people walking around when coincidently I handed one to Shannon Leto. He was really cool and let me get a picture with him and then we parted ways, but almost immediately I was called back over and told to compile a list of people I meet around town and they’ll go on a list and get into the concert for free. Which was really cool of them because many of the people I met around town had wanted to go but couldn't afford it. The show itself was very good, they sound as good live as they do on the recordings. The crowd adored the band, jumping and dancing to the killer beats put out. One thing that was definately special about this band was the way Jared addressed the crowd. At more then one point Jared called out to different people in the crowd, either to tell them to get off their cell phones because that’s no thing to do at a rock concert or to tell the guy up front to stop pummeling the girl he was standing next to. During the last song, Kings and Queens, the band started pointing out random crowd members for the bouncer to put on stage. In the end there were about thirty people on stage with the band. So this concert was very memorable for most of the people that went that day and I very much recommend people go see this band for themselves and create their own concert memories. The Used Live 13/12/2010
![]() Seeing The Used live was a real treat. On this particular tour they were selling download cards which doubled as backstage passes, unfortunately I had about a nine hour drive for this concert and a late start so by the time I got there the first opening band had finished playing and they sold out of these cards, not that they were selling many in the first place, I think it was only about twenty or so. I believe I can honestly say that’s the only disappointment I had at the concert. The Used is a band that sounds as amazing live as they do on the CD doubled with their amazing stage presence. This is a true rock band, from how professionally they play their instruments to how they can manipulate a crowd. They have some amazing fans and are able to make them go crazy during a show. They played all the songs off their Artwork CD along with older songs like Blue and Yellow and Taste of Ink. One great surprise though was when Wil Francis from Aiden came on stage and performed Box Full of Sharp Objects with the band. Before the song Bert split the crowd in half having each side of the room back up as far as they could and then rush each other in the middle which caused a huge mosh pit, during this chaos I had a huge chunk of hair pulled out and I didn’t even notice until later when I ran my hands through my hair and all the strands came out in my fingers, it was amazing. It was really easy to lose yourself to the music and the atmosphere. I can easily say that I’d go see this band again in a heartbeat and I recommend them not only for fans that haven't yet had a chance to see them, but I also recommend them for anyone who wants so see an amazing live show. Satellite Party Live 08/12/2010
![]() Horrible, simply horrible. I feel as though saying horrible a billion times wouldn’t be enough to cover how horrible this band was. I saw them with Smashing Pumpkins on their first tour after the seven year break. Satellite Party was the opening band and one I hadn’t heard of. I’ve always found concerts to be a really good way to make or break fans. It’s hard to judge how good a band truly is until you’ve seen them live, and I’ve become a fan of many bands that I hadn’t heard of after I’d seen them live, Satellite Party however was not one of these bands. The music in itself was hard to pay attention to, and being in a stadium with assigned seating I almost fell asleep in my seat. Looking around I wasn’t the only one having trouble staying awake. It seemed that the only people really into this band were the drunken people of an older generation. The band played their opening set amidst the yells of “Boooo” being yelled at the stage. There are not many bands that I’ve seen play that I would condone yelling that, but in this case I even joined in, hoping it might just get them off the stage faster, it didn’t work. I don’t really remember much about their music but I do remember a bit of what happened on stage. A woman in the band, an older woman, was on stage the whole time to pretty much sing a few lines in one or two of the songs. When she wasn’t singing she was attempting to use the microphone pole as a stripper pole, it was untactful. Really I couldn’t have been happier when they got off stage. |
